IMO Agrees On Mandatory Data Collection For Ship Fuel Consumption

Starting as early as 2018 the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee will be requiring ships over 5,000gt to record and report their fuel consumption for each type of fuel they use.

The agreement will be drafted for inclusion in MARPOL annex VI at MEPC 70.

Data will have to be reported to flag state at the end of each calendar year. If the ship’s fuel consumption data meets requirements, a statement of compliance will be issued by the flag state. Anonymised data will be transferred to the IMO Ship Fuel Consumption Database.
