Corrodere Academy are pleased to present the first training of its kind anywhere in the world: Coating Surveys course accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, approved by them for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and Lloyd’s Register. The online course is available to students wherever they may be and whenever they wish to study, 24/7, from 10th August 2020.

Coating surveys should be conducted by experienced personnel who can make sound judgement on the condition of an existing coating and develop information that can be used to make effective decisions on the management of the coatings. There are various types of coating surveys conducted throughout the industry ranging from the basic ‘walk-through’ visual inspection to the comprehensive coating survey necessary in the investigation of a coating failure.

This training course has been written by Brendan Fitzsimons and Trevor Parry – two leading figures in protective coatings whose names are synonymous with expertise and professional standards in protective coatings and corrosion control.

Brendan is the author of Fitz’s Atlas and Fitz‘s Atlas 2. He is a NACE Corrosion Specialist, Protective Coatings Specialist and a NACE Coating Inspector and Peer Reviewer. Brendan is also a Fellow Member of the Institute of Corrosion, a Chartered Scientist and has a Master’s degree in Materials Engineering.

Trevor is a UK expert to ISO committees and has been an expert witness in High Court, Arbitration and Mediation cases on the subject of paint coatings. He has presented and published several papers is a Chartered Chemist, a Chartered Scientist, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a professional member of the Institute of Corrosion and a member of NACE.

Students can achieve full certification and qualifications as a professional coating surveyor which will drive consistency in coating surveys and professional standards in the coatings industry. Asset owners will be able to accurately plan and forecast for future works. Moreover, the course will assist with paint guarantees, warranties and disputes.

There are two levels of entry on the coating surveys course:

Level 1 – Certificate of Completion

Entry Criteria: No formal qualifications within the coatings industry are required.

Study Time: 24 hours over a 12 month period

Assessment & Final Exam: Successful completion of online assessments only. There is no final exam.

Level 2 – Certification

Entry Criteria: Candidates must meet the following criteria;

  • Qualified Coatings Inspector (ICorr level 2, NACE level 2, SSPC Level 2, FROSIO level 2)
  • Paint chemist with field experience
  • Coating Engineer with field experience
  • Coating Surveyors who do not possess formal coating inspection qualifications but can demonstrate a minimum of 5 years experience as a coating surveyor. Two employer references will be required.

Study Time: 24 hours over a 12 month period

Assessment & Final Exam: Successful completion of online assessment and final exam. The exam is multiple choice with a pass rate of 70%.
